The cameras tracking your car are on the ballot

  1. 2023 Texas adds $1 to every auto policy for “catalytic-converter theft.” The fund quietly buys 3,200+ license-plate cameras.
  2. 2025 A sheriff's office searches cameras nationwide over an abortion. Austin drops out. The Legislature passes nothing.
  3. Aug 2026 10,000+ cameras statewide; 206 agencies feeding plate data to DPS.
  4. Aug 20 A Lufkin officer is indicted on 100 felony counts — the cameras tracked 11 people, one over 10,000 times.
  5. Aug 27 Gov. Abbott freezes all state Flock spending. A freeze is a signature. Only a law outlasts one — Texas has none.
  6. Nov 3 You elect the Legislature that decides.

Ask anyone who wants your vote:

  1. Should police need a warrant to search months of your driving history?
  2. Should Texas plate data be searchable by out-of-state or federal civil enforcement?
  3. How long is a scan of an innocent driver kept — and does the limit bind downloaded copies?
  4. Should state money buy license-plate readers at all?
  5. Will you put the answers in law, with penalties?
